Understand the complete cost of your Square POS.
Your total depends on your software plan, payment volume, hardware, accessories, locations, and which optional tools you actually use. Here’s how it’s built up — and how to get a real number.
Square’s plans, rates, and hardware offers change, and what you qualify for depends on your volume and setup. Publishing a number here would mean quoting you something stale. Instead we show you the cost categories, then give you a current quote for your actual configuration.
Where the money actually goes.
Your plan tier
Square for Retail comes in tiers. The free tier covers a lot of small shops. Paid tiers add deeper inventory, purchase orders, and multi-location tooling. Most overspending starts here — paying for a tier you don’t use.
The percentage on every sale
This is usually your largest ongoing cost, and it depends on payment method, plan, volume, and eligibility for custom pricing. It’s also where existing processors most often quietly overcharge.
One-time, per station
A full Register costs more than an iPad Stand, which costs more than a Reader. Add scanner, printer, drawer. This is one-time — and the easiest place to be sold things you don’t need.
Only if you’ll use them
Loyalty, marketing, online store, payroll, team management, gift cards. Each is genuinely useful to some stores. Turning them all on because they exist is how a cheap setup becomes an expensive one.
It isn’t simply × number of stores
Software and hardware needs vary per location, and central reporting changes which tier makes sense. Worth modelling properly before you open store two.
Cheapest today isn’t cheapest in a year.
A free plan that can’t do purchase orders costs you real money in stockouts. A top tier you never use is money burned. The right answer is the setup that matches how you actually run — which is the whole point of the consultation.
- We’ll tell you when the free tier is genuinely enough.
- We’ll tell you when an add-on isn’t worth it for you.
- We don’t make the project bigger to make it better.
On a short call we’ll read your current statement with you — effective rate, every fee line — and compare it against a Square setup built for your store. Nothing to send or upload. Or get a ballpark right now from your volume.
Pricing, answered.
Why won’t you just show me a price?
Because it would be wrong. Rates and plans change, and what you qualify for depends on your volume and configuration. We’d rather give you a current number for your actual setup than a stale one on a web page.
Can you guarantee I’ll save money?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. Some retailers are already on competitive rates — if that’s you, we’ll say so. The analysis tells you either way.
What does MK2POS charge?
We’re an independent reseller. We’ll be explicit about how we’re compensated and what any setup work costs before you commit to anything. No surprises at the end.
Do I have to buy hardware from you?
We’ll recommend the right kit and can supply it. If you already own compatible hardware, we’ll tell you what carries over rather than sell you a duplicate.
